Tree Care Advisor Program Description
The Minnesota Tree Care Advisor program, founded in 1993, aids in the development of environmental stewards through education and the promotion of volunteerism. Tree Care Advisor volunteers are dedicated to volunteerism and to improving the urban and community forests in the State of Minnesota.
Core Course Education
Tree Care Advisors receive their initial training through what is called “Core Course”. Beginning in 2018, the Core Course will be taught half online (estimated 21 hours) and half in person (21 hours) over the course of multiple months. Each Core Course session is limited to 20 people to ensure individualized attention. The Core Course has traditionally been taught on the UMN St. Paul campus, though upon demand, courses have been offered in Mankato, Rochester, and Saint Peter. In 2018, the Tree Care Advisor Program is expanding to bring Core Course training each of the following areas: Central Minnesota, Crookston, the Twin Cities/Metro, the University of Minnesota St. Paul campus, and Rochester.
Volunteer Track: Under the volunteer track we ask that you set a goal of 100 hours within your first three years or at least 25 hours each year related to trees, shrubs, vines, pests, pathogens, etc. Every year, a total of 4 hours of education must be acquired to retain Tree Care Advisor active status. This is to affirm that volunteers are receiving the most up to date information on tree care.
Registration Fee: $170
Professional Development Track: This track has a higher cost and no volunteer service hours are required. This track is designed for adults working in a profession where urban forestry knowledge is needed, but they do not have the time to go back to school, and do not wish to contribute volunteer time. We do not claim that Tree Care Advisor training is as in-depth as a course in tree care.
Registration Fee: $455
